Transfer guidelines

Notification and acceptance

Watch for an email and/or text message through PowerSchool. Accept or decline your offer by the deadline in the transfer timeline. Applications may be canceled after that date.

One school year at a time

Approved transfers are authorized for one school year. Families must submit a transfer application each year.

Space and student standing

Under SBISD Board policies FDA (Regulation) and FDB (Regulation), a principal may decline to renew a transfer during or at the end of the school year if transfer criteria are not met. Space must be available at the school, grade level, specialty classes and special programs, if applicable. Students must maintain satisfactory attendance, including tardies; passing academic grades; and satisfactory conduct, with no Level III, IV or V Code of Conduct violations.

Transportation

Parents must provide transportation to and from school and ensure students arrive and are picked up on time.

Special education placement

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) requires the district to provide a free appropriate public education (FAPE). The admission, review and dismissal (ARD) committee develops the student’s individualized education program (IEP) and determines the placement where it can be implemented in the least restrictive environment (LRE).

Additional review

An offer may be rescinded if further review finds that the application does not meet SBISD Board policy transfer guidelines.

Frequently asked questions

Who reviews and approves transfers?

Campus principals review new and renewal in-district and out-of-district applications. SBISD community superintendents review new transfer applications for employees’ children. Campus principals review employee student transfer renewals.

My child had an approved transfer last year. Do I need to apply again?

Yes. Every family must apply each year through the online application system. Approval depends on the transfer criteria outlined above.

Can my child’s transfer be revoked during the school year?

Yes. Transfers may be nonrenewed or revoked during a school year for a documented pattern of unsatisfactory attendance, academic performance or behavior, in accordance with Board policies FDA (Local), FDA (Regulation) and FDB (Regulation).

What is a capped campus?

A capped campus has limited space for additional students. Students already attending on an approved transfer who remain in good standing may continue in future years if space permits. Siblings may receive preference to attend the same school during the same school year as a sibling who previously attended, but transfer criteria must still be met and space must be available, under FDB (Regulation).

Is transportation provided?

No. Parents must provide transportation to and from school.

Will my child be eligible for UIL activities?

Eligibility depends on University Interscholastic League (UIL) regulations and guidelines. A transfer does not guarantee eligibility, and district transfer guidelines do not override UIL rules.

Who qualifies for an employee student transfer?

Employee student transfers are available under SBISD policy for children under the legal guardianship, by birth or court order, of a full-time employee. Nieces, nephews, stepchildren, grandchildren and other relatives do not qualify unless the employee has court-ordered legal guardianship.

Will my child’s accommodations and modifications follow them?

For students with disabilities, the Section 504 or ARD committee determines required instructional and related services and recommends placement based on the student’s current plan or IEP. A transfer invitation will be denied if the Section 504 or ARD committee recommends services at a different school.
